Another trip down memory lane for Chadderton Baths and Library
Following on from the successful reminiscence workshops a few weeks ago which captured a range of local people’s memories and experiences of the existing Chadderton Library and the now closed swimming pool, a second photographic stage of the reminiscence project is taking place.
As part of an ongoing programme of community involvement around the exciting new Chadderton Health and Wellbeing Centre development currently under construction, Oldham Council’s Adult and Community Services thought it would be a great idea to develop a series of reminiscence workshops to record the memories and stories of a range of local people who use or have used these old buildings.
Executive Director of Adult and Community Services said “Although we are looking towards the future with this new state of the art facility, it is important to celebrate and record our history. Community based art initiatives such as this help to ensure that we capture the legacy of the old baths and library and encourage participation in the new development. It is also hoped that some elements of these projects can be incorporated into the flagship Health and Wellbeing centre for future generations to enjoy.”
The first round of workshops were a great success involving around 70 members of the local Chadderton community from the Chadderton Local Historical Society, Chadderton Library readers group and local school children from Westwood Primary School and Bare Trees Primary School.
The next trip down memory lane will see local photographers and an Oldham Council literature development officer working with members of the Chadderton Local Historical Society to capture more stories and portraits about the old baths and library.
Photos of the old baths and library will also be taken for local archive and will be exhibited locally.
The new Wellbeing Centre planned for Chadderton is being led by Oldham Council and is being developed as part of the award winning LIFT (Local Improvement Finance Trust) initiative in Oldham by the borough’s LIFTco, Community 1st Oldham Limited.
The new centre will bring together a range of organisations including key Council services and the Police under one roof, to deliver joined up services at a local level and ensures that the community have access to excellent facilities including a 25-metre swimming pool, library, community meeting rooms and a fitness suite
